Musical Futures at NTC:
- NTC have used
MF approaches to develop their curriculum for around six years
- KS3
early units use non-formal workshop style sessions (using older students
when possible as tutors) to develop instrumental skills
- Later
units make heavy use of the informal learning model for students to
develop performance work
- NTC were involved in the development of the song writing unit in the
current Musical Futures teacher pack
- NTC's new facilities were designed with Musical Futures techniques in mind and
maximise the opportunities for group work
- NTC's KS4 and 5 curriculum builds on the Musical Futures approaches used in KS3
to allow for a range of pathways to suit students needs
- Extra
Curricular Events are based around encouraging students to showcase their
skills in a wide range of musical styles that are relevant to them
Why Musical Futures?
“Six years ago we were exploring different approaches to make our music
curriculum more relevant to the students we teach. Spotting Musical Futures in
the TES one weekend, it helped confirm all the things we were developing.
Putting the approaches into practise has helped make music one of the most
popular and successful subjects in our all boys school. The key to our success
has been putting the approaches into every area of our curriculum and also our
approaches to our work out of lessons.“
“We believe in learning by ‘doing’!”
