How long have you been working with Musical Futures?
What do you do?
I am a Head of Music at Monk’s Walk School in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire. I am also the Subject Leader for teacher training in Luton with the Chiltern Training Group. I am very proud of the highly successful Musical Futures department that we have built at Monk’s Walk. MF is the underlying ethos that underpins all of our decisions about what and how to deliver in the classroom, extra-curricular, peripatetic lessons and wider into our community outreach work. It helps us think about whether what we are doing is right for ‘music’s sake’!
What is your background?
Like many musicians I started playing the piano at a young age and when I was tall enough to hold it, began playing the double bass. Teaching music has been my aspiration from as early as I can remember. I am extremely passionate about delivering an inclusive and challenging, high quality music education. I really enjoy helping train other teachers in how Musical Futures can help facilitate this ambition.
Five Words that sum up Musical Futures
Intuitive, Interactive, Accessible, Flexible, Fun!
What music are you listening to at the moment?
My music playlists are constantly shuffling! I like to have my ear to the ground in as many styles as possible but lately I have been more tuned towards anything fun and funky, particularly some James Brown classics and Stevie Wonder.
