What do you do?

I am Head of Performing Arts at Castleford Academy and teach Music to pupils aged 11 to 16. I am also a Specialist Leader in Education for Music.

What is your background?

I studied Music at Leeds University followed by a PGCE at Huddersfield University and my main instruments are Piano, Voice and Flute. I have been at Castleford Academy throughout my career from NQT to Head of Music and on to Head of Performing Arts and specialise in coaching, training and mentoring. I have been involved in training members of staff in my department, across school and Music Teachers in the local area. I only started accessing Music Tech when I bought my MacBook in my first year of teaching – but it changed my life! I was able to record/multi-track my own music. Since then, I have written four musicals for my school, using Cubase to record my songs as I go. I have lots of experience with recording as a musician/composer and have created endless tutorial videos for my pupils to use.

What are you most looking forward to working with Musical Futures on this programme?

I am truly inclusive in my teaching – I firmly believe Music is for all and it is our duty as teachers to cater for all and inspire. I have seen how Music Tech can ignite something inside a pupil and can’t wait to explore new innovative ways of doing this!

Five Words that sum up Musical Futures

Engaging, Inclusive, Inspiring, Develops Passion.

What music are you listening to at the moment?

Lady Gaga, Ed Sheeran, Lots of Musical Theatre – Rent, Wicked – anything that I can sing as loud as possible in my car!
