Overview
LearnToPlay is specifically designed to equip all Primary school teachers with the confidence, skills and resources to make music with their classes. Equally suited to both generalist teachers and specialist teachers of music – no prior experience of teaching music is expected.
The approach enables children to develop basic musical skills and knowledge whilst developing ensemble musicianship skills and confidence through an engaging curriculum.
Our simple, step by step award-winning online resources platform, Musical Futures Online is perfect for young beginner musicians and offers a selection of content which will allow primary teachers to tailor the approach depending on the resources available within their school.
Introduce rhythmic awareness, musical knowledge and instrumental skill development using the instruments on your music trolley plus ukuleles, acoustic guitars or keyboards. Warm up exercises, rhythm and clapping games, playing as a whole class are covered from beginner stages to full class performances using specially created interactive backing tracks:
- MakingMusic: Body Percussion, Untuned Percussion, ChairDrumming
- LearnToPlay: Ukulele or guitar, tuned percussion, guitar or keyboard as appropriate
Whatever your level of experience, we’ll get you playing and show you how to use these practical, hands-on resources with your learners!
Our award-winning online resources platform, Musical Futures Online has been designed to support teachers to deliver music in an engaging, practical and enjoyable way incorporating the values and ethos of the Musical Futures approach and offers teachers step by step guidance to teaching music through an exciting interactive resource aimed at Years 1 to 6
This is a face-to-face training session and all places must be booked in advance of the day
Aims of the Session
- Develop the confidence of teachers, who aren’t necessarily musicians themselves, to deliver outstanding lessons that are rooted in active music making
- Explore ways to ensure that all learners are fully engaged in authentic music lessons
- Develop confidence in playing and teaching strumming/rhythmic patterns, chord shapes and easy chord progressions
- Understand how to develop ensemble musicianship skills, teamwork and performance skills
- Explore resources to help teachers with beginner ensemble performances using a range of classroom instruments
- Examine how Musical Futures approaches and resources can support the teaching of the National Curriculum and the Model Music Curriculum
- Understand how Musical Futures Online can be utilised to support the Musical Futures practical approach to learning in the primary classroom
Sessions
- Exploring – Discover how the MakingMusic pulse and rhythm and LearnToPlay instrumental resources aid the develop of foundational instrumental skills in a whole class setting
- Performing: Using material from the MakingMusic and LearnToPlay resources, discover how to teach essential skills for developing basic musical skills learning chords and harmonic/strumming patterns in preparation for performing a range of songs at different levels
- Developing: Explore repertoire from our MakingMusic Classroom Collection and LearnToPlay Songbooks to put the musical knowledge acquired into practice using popular songs that are relevant to student
- Planning: Developing your music curriculum using Musical Futures approaches and Musical Futures Online resources
Who is It For?
- Primary class teachers who don’t consider themselves to be music specialists
- For primary and secondary music specialists – LearnToPlay is a great start to learning chord shapes, easy chord progressions and basic riffs for students
- For instrumental teachers – LearnToPlay can be adapted by teachers engaged in small group or Whole Class Learning.
