Building a Successful Key Stage 3 Music Curriculum – Online, Twilight

Explore how to create an engaging Key Stage 3 music curriculum that builds musical knowledge, skills and confidence through practical music-making.

Overview

This course offers attendees the opportunity to explore what makes Key Stage 3 music a vital and valuable part of music education in secondary schools.

Suitable for anyone involved in teaching or managing music, the course will focus on how to build a curriculum that places
meaningful practical work in performance and composition alongside the development of musical knowledge and understanding.

Led by a classroom music teacher with experience of curriculum design and Musical Futures approaches, the day will explore how pupils can learn through doing, hearing, creating and performing, while steadily building the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to progress.

The course will also consider how a strong KS3 curriculum can support transition from Key Stage 2, helping students build on prior musical experiences. Delegates will reflect on how curriculum choices at KS3 can prepare students effectively for the demands of Key Stage 4, whether they go on to study music in GCSE or BTEC pathways.

Throughout the day, there will be opportunities to discuss how a purposeful and well-sequenced KS3 curriculum can raise engagement, improve musical outcomes, and ensure that Key Stage 3 is an essential stage of musical development.

Practical advice

This was a fantastic day, giving me lots of ideas and reinvigorated how I approach things. It will influence our schemes of work and how they are delivered massively right from Year 7 upwards.

Training Attendee

Highly recommended

Great to work on the ideas practically and try out all the examples as a "student". Lots of ideas to introduce a more practical approach to whole class teaching in KS3 and at GCSE
